Getting Sleep
It may not be easy to come by, but you will need to get sleep. At first it will be in short bursts between when the baby needs to eat. The first few days that can be in 60 to 90minute chunks. Babies need to eat really frequently at first because their stomach is so tiny.
After a few days hopefully parents can start getting a few longer chunks of sleep. It is magic when you can get 4 hours straight. If you feel off, or upset, or just not like yourself, one of the first things to evaluate is HAVE I GOTTEN ANY SLEEP TODAY? If the answer is no, it's important that you find a way to sleep.
You might have to:
- wear earplugs and have another person be on for listening for the baby
- sleep at hours that are normally reserved for awake time
- let other task go undone so that you can make sleep a priority
- cancel social plans so that you can ensure you get enough sleep
- ask for help from someone who cares about you
- check in with your provider if you have tried to sleep but can't, there are options for medications that are safe to take while nursing
